The Mechanic Helper assists the mechanic in the repair and rehab of transit buses and other heavy equipment using hand tools, precision measuring instruments, and machine tools.
- Reads job orders and observes and listens to operating equipment, understands conformance specifications to determine malfunctions causes
- Maintains shop area, equipment and tools in a safe, clean and orderly condition
- Under supervision of the mechanic, diagnose deficiencies and perform skilled and semi-skilled maintenance, returning the coach or van to full service capability and provide the customer with the safest, cleanest, most economical and dependable vehicle possible
- Assist the mechanic in major rebuilding, repair and/or removal and replacement of mechanical differentials, blowers, pumps, motors, injectors, cylinder heads, compressors and air brake, steering, air conditioning, and electrical systems and associated vehicle parts
- Raise equipment and heavy parts or equipment using hydraulic jacks or hoists/overhead cranes.
Repair and adjust seats, doors, and windows, and install and repair accessories. Assist in rewiring starting systems, lights, and instrument panels
- Use hand tools such as screwdrivers, pliers, wrenches, pressure gauges, and precision instruments, as well as power tools such as pneumatic wrenches, welding equipment, and jacks and hoists/overhead cranes
- Assist the mechanic in the inspection and verification of dimensions and clearances of parts to ensure compliance to factory specifications

Essential Job Functions
A Water Service Helper II is responsible for performing a combination of the following essential job functions: assists in installing, maintaining and repairing service connections, water mains, meters, hydrants, water storage tanks, pumping equipment and appurtenant facilities; assists in controlling traffic at construction and maintenance sites; assists in cleaning and maintaining tools and equipment; assists in cutting, threading, and fitting pipe; assists in testing and repairing water meters in the field or shop; assists with cleaning water storage tanks, pipes, and pumping plant equipment; operates and maintains vehicles and equipment for installing water systems facilities and excavating and backfilling operations; transports construction equipment to and from work sites; reads water meters; assists in using hydraulic, pneumatic, and hand tools to break pavement, drill, dig and backfill trenches and repair pavement; responds to emergencies during normally scheduled time off and works unscheduled shifts to meet emergency requirements, as needed; and drives vehicles or equipment with a gross vehicle weight of 26,000 pounds or more to and from work sites, as needed.

A valid California Class C Driver License is required to perform job-related essential functions.

A Water System Distribution Operator Grade D1 Certificate issued by the California Department of Health Services will be required for appointment to this class.

For each job held, give the name and address of your employer, your job title, beginning and ending dates, description of work performed, and salary earned. All information supplied by applicants is subject to verification. We may reject your application at any time during the examination process.
In order to receive credit for any type of college coursework or certification, applicants MUST provide a legible copy of their transcripts or certification within fifteen (15) calendar days from filing. Unofficial transcripts are acceptable.

SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER
All applicants must enter a valid social security number at the time of filing. Entering anything other than a valid social security (i.e. 000-00-0000, 111-11-1111, etc.) will result in an automatic rejection of your application.
NO SHARING USER ID AND PASSWORD
All applicants must file their application online using their own user ID and password. Using a family member or friend's user ID and password may erase a candidate's original application record.
COMPUTER AND INTERNET ACCESS AT LIBRARIES
For candidates who may not have regular access to a computer or the internet, applications can be completed on computers at public libraries throughout Los Angeles County.
