Open Developer Operator Job Description Sample
Senior Open Edx Developer
Where would we be without knowledge and a society of passionate learners? From science to the humanities, the acquisition of skills and knowledge are key to what it means to be human, and what it means to operate as a healthy society.
The Appsembler team is committed to seeing this ongoing spread of knowledge and skills, which are critical to making us who we are. Appsembler’s two key products, Tahoe and Virtual Labs, form an experiential learning platform that gives learners direct experience with various software via hands-on exercises. On a daily basis, we work closely with companies like Akamai, Redis Labs, Cybereason, and Dremio, as well as institutions like ASU, UW, and Penn State.
Appsembler is a distributed-first team which means that we are not limited by borders, and we hire and operate in a manner that assumes that team members are not co-located. We love to learn new things, and we each like to share what we’ve learned with teammates, customers, partners, and the open-source community. We’re empathetic, curious, and care about the wellbeing of our teammates.
We’re looking for an engineer with both Open edX and DevOps experience to join our Accelerator Team. The Accelerator Team’s main objective is to accelerate our pace of development across Engineering, and we are currently focused on speeding up the pace of upgrades to Open edX, the open-source core of our learning system. You’ll also be accelerating the speed at which we deploy code and configuration.
While some DevOps experience is useful for working on the Accelerator Team, you’ll primarily be the team’s expert on Open edX. You’ll need to evaluate our code customizations and identify areas where we could leverage new features in Open edX -- and areas where we could contribute our work back upstream. You should feel comfortable talking through these decisions with other engineers at Appsembler, as well as collaborating with others in the Open edX community. You’ll be expected to keep up with the latest developments in Open edX coming from edX and the community, to help our team get ahead of upcoming changes.
You don’t need Docker experience today, but you should be familiar with how Docker works and ready to work with others in the Open edX community to build a Docker-based version of Open edX.
Senior Software Engineer (Level 3)
You should be able to own the development and rollout for a major feature, project, or initiative. This means that you’ll be making design decisions and evaluating, maintaining, and improving existing code. You may work directly with Product Marketing on the launch process for features you own. You not only adhere to our processes, but also teach others and hold them to the standards. You are able to mentor more junior engineers.
You’ll do well in the role if you can work independently on features and support issues while also collaborating with your teammates on architectural discussions, code reviews, and releases. You’ll be responsible for writing tested code with healthy coverage, fixing bugs, and occasionally advising customers.
In this role, and even more so because we’re a distributed team, communication and critical thinking skills are essential.
Top 5 priorities for this role
- Experience configuring, supporting, and upgrading Open edX in production environments -- ideally including changes with custom code
- Ability to work closely in a team with other engineers and make well-informed architectural decisions
- Experience extending Open edX in a sustainable, supportable manner
- Enthusiasm for learning alongside and teaching others -- both teammates and the open source community
- Ability to communicate well and work in a distributed environment with minimal oversight
- 5+ years experience in software development
- 1+ years Open edX development experience
- Experience with managing complex code merges
- Experience writing system level integration tests.
- Tenacity and thoroughness in finding and fixing a wide range of technical issues, both at the system and application level
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills for working with a distributed team. English doesn’t have to be your first language, in fact we have a lot of Engineers from all over the world, however it’s what we speak internally and with our customers.
- Strong knowledge of Linux-based systems and command line tools
Time Zones: Preferably GMT-4 to GMT+2. Other time zones OK, but must be available for planning and every-sprint review meetings at 12pm ET. Our team members have worked successfully from places like Zagreb, California, Amman, and Shanghai.
