Contribution and implementation of best practices in optical and illumination design

Position Summary The Department of Cell Biology and Physiology is a broad and interdisciplinary basic science department in the School of Medicine at UNC-CH. The individual who fills this optical engineer position will be working specifically on the Nemonic (NExt generation MultiphOton NeuroImaging Consortium) project to develop and widely disseminate state-of-the-art technology for multiphoton imaging and associated techniques for the neuroscience community, and to advance emerging technology for future innovation in multiphoton neuroimaging.
Ultimately, the activities of the Nemonic project will enable new experiments and accelerate discoveries in neuroscience. This position reports directly to the PI, Spencer Smith. This individual will work with Dr.
Smith, industry contacts (ThorLabs, Coherent, Newport, and others), and all consortium members to design and assemble the instrumentation. Design work will be collaborative, but this position will be the lead in assembly, testing, troubleshooting, optimization, and related work. They will aid in design and integration of the optical and electronic components into a functioning system and do basic engineering characterization and testing (e.g., point-spread function measurements). Advanced knowledge and experience is expected for this position, but we do expect to perform some training for this rather specialized project.
The individual will also assist in shipping instrumentation and setting it up in the Case Study labs, and providing troubleshooting support. About the Role Reporting into the Manager of Systems and Optical Engineering, the purpose of the Optical Engineer is to design, model, analyze, and test optical and electro-optical systems and components. SUMMARY The engineer shall assist with the development of optical and opto-mechanical sub-systems for the creation and control of EUV radiation in support of technology development for next generation products, and support the development & integration of innovative core technology elements and/or system concepts into engineering solutions. Principal - Optical Engineer
Chosen team member will work with multi-discipline teams supporting military programs through the application of optical design tools in the development and production phases of optical sensors. Assignments may include optical design, optical analysis such as stray light analysis, optical tolerancing, prototype development with optical component suppliers, optical testing, troubleshooting EO systems, and providing solutions to a variety of EO problems of moderate scope and complexity. Candidate should be capable of leading small teams and will work closely with Integrated Product Team Leads/Program Managers ensuring engineering requirements are defined, risks are managed and schedules/budgets are met.
Candidate will work independently in determining and meeting the technical, financial and schedule objectives of projects. As an Optical Engineer, decisions are data driven in nature and require preparing technical justification analysis reports as well as presenting to a variety of Engineering Review Boards. NOTE: This position can be a Principal Systems Engineer or Sr.
Principal Engineer based on the candidate's qualifications as they relate to the skills, leadership, experience and responsibility requirements of the position.
US Citizenship required Bachelor's degree in Optics, Physics, Systems Engineering or related discipline Minimum of 8 years related work experience in optical design Extensive knowledge and experience in infrared systems optical design, analysis, optical tolerancing, fabrication, and testing Expert in CODE V and/or Zemax, and Excel and Matlab Candidate is required to attain a secret level clearance and must have INTERIM SECRET clearance before start date.
