Medical Technologist Senior - Blood Bank
The Medical Laboratory Scientist, Senior performs all the essential job duties of a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), formerly known as Medical Technician (MT), as well as assumes technical responsibility for a particular area of a large laboratory setting. May temporarily assume the duties of the core lab supervisor, or other supervisors of specialized areas, in her/his absence
Under general supervision of a Pathologist and other supervision, and in accordance with Company policies, procedures and guidelines, this position:
Performs routine laboratory test procedures as outlined in the laboratory standard operating procedures manuals. Adheres to quality assurance and quality control procedures in performing all testing
Correlates clinical information and/or previous lab results and reports discrepancies to Medical Technologist Supervisor or other designate. Consults with superiors or pathologist when no preset criteria for decision-making is available before taking action
Collects and directs the collection of specimens with rigid attention to proper patient identification, priority status and hospital and laboratory safety and infection control policies for clinical testing
Maintains and operates lab equipment; able to detect malfunctions as they occur by review of instruments results. Troubleshoots the problem with technologist or service representative assistance
Ensures appropriate lab supplies are always on hand in their assigned area or department
May be rotated to other lab locations or shifts as necessary
Trains or instructs laboratory personnel in performance of lab tests and procedures where assigned
Participates in developmental work on new tests
Participates in established TQM activities, QC testing of lab reagents and maintenance of equipment. Follows protocol for running and documenting control values. Collects, evaluates, and reports quality management data in order to monitor and improve laboratory performance
Attends and participates in continuing education programs to monitor proficiency, expand current knowledge and enhance professional excellence. Willingly shares knowledge and provides clinical orientation to other members of the staff
Trains students from affiliated programs or new employees as assigned
Works closely with all laboratory personnel to ensure timely client service and accurate test results

Maintains open communication with supervisors, pathologists, and fellow employees to ensure optimal operation of department. Communicates pertinent information to other members of the health care team in a clinically relevant time frame to enhance the lab's contribution to patient care

Blood Bank Technician
Performs clinical laboratory procedures within Blood Bank department. Ensures compliance with all regulatory and accredited agencies.
Keeps inventory at par to maintain daily operation. Provides accurate and timely results to physicians, nurses and other health care personnel. Reports all test results promptly, accurately, and efficiently to the patient's caregiver in order to assist in diagnosis and treatment.
Maintain quality assurance and quality control policies and procedures to ensure validity of test results. 1.Communication, Education, Recruitment and Donor Suitability
Promote, educate and recruit potential donor mothers: through explanation of the cord blood donation program to expectant mothers and participation in hospital programs directed towards pregnant mothers.
Perform initial screen to identify suitable potential cord blood donor mothers
Explain the donation program.
Obtain informed consent from all potential cord blood donor mothers for the collection, testing and use of the cord blood.
Evaluate donors for suitability to donate infant's cord blood
Interview donor mothers to obtain answers to a standard questionnaire designed to elicit behavioral risk factors, medical and travel history information of the donor mother and infant's immediate family.
2.Communication and with potential donor mothers/families, hospital staff and team members
Must have excellent verbal communication skills
Train obstetricians in the in-utero collection technique, including retraining as required, and monitoring of competency on an annual basis.
Participate in the education of hospital staff.
3.Product, Samples and Records Management:
Responsible for the collection of cord blood and maternal blood samples using aseptic techniques
Collect cord blood ex-utero in the dedicated collection room
Assist and/or prepare the supplies for the obstetricians performing in-utero collections
Collect and/or facilitate drawing of maternal blood samples
Prepare the cord blood donations, maternal samples and paperwork for transportation to the Cord Blood Bank on pre-arranged schedules

4.Quality Control Compliance:
Perform procedures and maintain accurate documentation in compliance with current Good Laboratory Practice, current Good Manufacturing Practice and current Good Tissue Practice regulations and applicable accreditation agency standards, including but not limited to FACT-NetCord, CAP and CLIA.
Participate in the daily functions of the CBB collection room, including data and records management, inventory management, ordering and logging of supplies and reagents, cleaning, temperature monitoring, ancillary office and administrative functions.
Responsible for the quality control and documentation of all equipment, reagents and supplies that are used for cord blood collection.
Document deviations and events; notify technical and quality management personnel in timely manner and assist in the investigation of the cause and any required corrective actions.

Blood Bank Supervisor Evenings (Lenox Hill Hospital)
Coordinates the daily activities of staff in the blood bank. Supervises the on-going technical operations of the section.
Ensures the validity and accuracy of test results. Coordinates staff, materials and equipment needs.
1.Supervises Blood Bank staff, including training, discipline. Authorizes overtime as needed to ensure efficient workflow and adequate coverage. Responsible for ongoing evaluation of job performance.
2.Oversees timely filling of all transfusion requests. Prepare blood or blood products for patient use and reports to Blood Bank Director on a timely basis related to technical and professional problems.
3.Ensures compliance with AABB, FDA, CAP, JCAHO, and Department of Health Standards for blood according to usage and projected need.
4.Monitors supplies of reagents to ensure adequacy at all times. Also orders blood according to usage and projected need.
5.Maintains adequate amounts of lab supplies and initiates steps to increase or decrease quantities as necessary. Removes expired blood products on a timely basis with proper record keeping.

7.Actively assist in in-service education of the staff.
