Performs journey-level sheet metal installation, fabrication, assembly and repair work.
Positions allocable to this class typically report to a Sheet Metal Supervisor and uses a variety of hand tools and power equipment in the installation, fabrication, assembly and repair of sheet metal articles and equipment. Incumbents are required to have a working knowledge of the sheet metal operation, sufficient to independently perform all the essential elements of work common to the fabrication and repair of sheet metal articles and equipment, and sufficient to train and provide technical supervision for apprentices and helpers.
Essential Job Functions
Fabricates or repairs such sheet metal articles as roofing, gutters, flashing, louvers, ventilators, ducts, hoods, sinks, steam tables, trays, lockers, shelves, fire doors and metal windows.
Fabricates signs, ducts, vessels, etc., from plastics.
Lays out, cuts, shapes and constructs articles of sheet metal, including black and galvanized iron and steel, tin, copper, brass, zinc, and stainless steel.
Transfers patterns from blueprints to metal, using scale, compass, divider, prick punch and other layout tools.
Punches or drills holes for rivets, bolts or screws.
Solders, welds and brazes.
Grinds and files seams, joints and rough surfaces; burrs and turns edges.
Maintains tools and equipment.
Supervise apprentices and helpers, as required.
Operates forklifts, construction, and other material-handling equipment, as required.
Drives automotive equipment to and from work sites to transport the necessary tools, equipment, and materials required to perform the job.
OPTION I: Completion of a recognized apprenticeship training program* in sheet metal work of at least four years duration.
OPTION II: Five years' experience in sheet metal work in the building trades, one year of which must have been at the journey-level.
A valid California Class C Driver License* is required to perform job-related essential functions. Candidates offered these positions would be required to show proof of a driver license prior to appointment.
- License Information: Successful applicants for this position will be required to obtain a copy of his/her driving record from the California State Department of Motor Vehicles before being appointed.
A copy of your driving record must be presented at the time of your appointment. License must not be suspended, restricted, or revoked. AN APPLICANT WHOSE DRIVING RECORD SHOWS THREE (3) OR MORE VIOLATIONS WITHIN THE LAST YEAR WILL NOT BE APPOINTED.
Physical Class III - Moderate: Includes standing or walking most of the time, with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, and reaching; includes working on irregular surfaces, occasionally lifting objects weighting over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT INFORMATION
- To qualify under Option I, applicants must submit a photocopy of the certificate of completion of a recognized apprentice training program in sheet metal work WITH your online application at the time of filing or during the examination process but prior to promulgation. Failure to provide the required documentation prior to promulgation will result in application rejection. Apprenticeship training programs must be recognized by a national, global, or regional accrediting agency, the California State Department of Education, the California State Department of Labor Division of Apprenticeship Standards, or the Council for Private Postsecondary and Vocational Education.
Journey-level experience is defined as possessing the required knowledge, skills, and training to perform a full-range and diversity of work independently and reliably. Positions at this level operate with fairly significant freedom from day-to-day supervision and need little or no guidance on such matters as selecting appropriate problem solving methods and techniques, locating appropriate regulation, or applying proper procedures to carry out work. To qualify under Option II, please ensure application/resumes contain detailed information specifically addressing journey-level experience.
As part of this application process, applicants will be required to complete a supplemental questionnaire.The questionnaire contains a pre-investigative questionnaire which will be utilized as part of the background investigation process to ensure applicants meet the standards set forth by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. Applicants who fail the pre-investigative questionnaire will be disqualified and will have to wait twelve (12) months from the date of the disqualification in order to reapply.
This examination will consist of an interview covering training, experience and general ability to perform the duties of the position weighted 100%.
CANDIDATES MUST ACHIEVE A PASSING SCORE OF 70% OR HIGHER ON THE EXAMINATION IN ORDER TO BE PLACED ON THE ELIGIBLE REGISTER.

SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES MUST COMPLETE A THOROUGH BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION, INCLUDING FINGERPRINT SEARCH. Examples of disqualifying factors include: Any felony convictions; job related misdemeanor convictions; certain serious traffic convictions or patterns of traffic violations (3 moving violations in one year; failure to appear; at fault accidents; suspended license; driving under the influence); poor credit history; poor employment history; substance abuse; anyone on probation.

Facilities Management is looking for a self directed, self motivated and hard working Trades Helper to be a part of our Facilities Inspection team. The trades helper will assist the Facility Inspector in identifying needed building repairs and performing necessary work. The successful candidate will have the ability to communicate effectively and provide good customer service while having good working knowledge of trades and maintenance. Working conditions may include restricted movement, dirty environment, extreme temperatures and intense noise. This also includes lifting and carrying heavy objects.

Duties & Responsibilities
Assists Facilities Inspector with inspections and repairs depending on assigned jobs within aesthetics, plumbing, paint, electrical, HVAC, mill work, flooring, fire safety and lighting.
Visibly identifies present building needs and proceeds to document findings on provided electronic device.
Assists with collecting and delivering materials and/or equipment needed at the job sites.
Cleans and/or performs minor repairs to plumbing, paint, electrical, HVAC, mill work, flooring, and lighting.
Assists in fabrication of welding and sheet metal ducts.
Assists in installation of duct-work.
Performs clean-up activities as jobs are completed and in shop areas.
Assists in shop vehicle maintenance.

Designs, constructs, installs and repairs ducts, fume hoods, exhaust fans, guttering, flashings, cadaver tables, and a variety of metal products by applying sheet metal worker skills at the journeyman level to accommodate the requesting University departments. Operates sheet metal machines such as cutters, breaks, cleat formers, rolls, folders, hand crimpers, soldering irons, spot welders, and a variety of other machines and hand tools, to cut and shape new and parts for old equipment in accordance with accepted sheet metal practice.
Determines appropriate materials by reviewing sketches, plans, blueprints, and specifications for use in the construction of new equipment. Consults with departments to formulate designs and dimensions of new equipment by using creative and innovative skills in order to provide the necessary equipment to the requesting departments. May act in a lead capacity to instruct new employees as to the procedures used by a sheet metal worker.
Ensures that metal products are constructed in accordance with prepared designs and drawings as specified by the department. Provides assistance to departments in preparing drawings to visualize a piece of equipment needed which cannot be purchased. Provides guidance to apprentices to insure that they are able to learn the trade in an efficient manner.
One day comprehensive examination; successful completion of an approved 4 year, 8,000+ hour accredited apprenticeship program in sheet metal work, or four years professional sheet metal experience, or equivalency; demonstrated customer service skills; and oral and written communications skills required.

- Plan, design and implement manufacturing assembly & fabrication processes.
- Works with engineering to analyze problems with product and performance; confirms solutions or enhancements.
- Process Improvement, improve efficiencies and recommended enhancements.
- Bachelors in Engineering (Industrial or Mechanical).
- 3+ years of engineering experience.

5+ Years as a supervisor on a ship
10+ years working as a Sheet Metal Mechanic in a shipyard.
Must be able to pass a Pre-Employment Workability Screening.
Must be able to obtain a Government facility security pass.
May be required to travel to multiple locations in the course of a workday.
Must be willing to work locally and out-of-state.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Know how to write both technical and conditional reports.
Interpret company policies, enforce safety regulations, and analyze and resolve problems to/with workers.
Assign duties to workers and establish or adjust work procedures to meet production schedules.
Able to inspect any Sheet Metal work and assure that it will meet all QA Standards.
Perform all other duties as assigned.
