Kodiak Group - Associate Product Engineer
Assists as a member of Kodiak Group Busioness Unit development / commercialization engineering team to produce world class products, which meet or exceed company and category expectations with regard to brand integrity, design, product innovation, functional performance, and return on investment.
Contributes to the research, development and implementation of new and existing materials, components and shoe making techniques in order to aid design and advance the innovation of the product for the assigned category.
1 PROJECT MANAGEMENT -
Works as a member of the Product Creation team to maintain product integrity with respect to safety footwear pre-certification at each milestone.
Projects to include Competitor product benchmark tear downs, traction analysis, at conceptual/line close/sales meeting stages as applicable; and any unique end use requirement(s).
Projects can be managed with internal / external resources utilizing product simulation computer software. For example, 3D CAD solid / surface modeling; Finite Element Analysis (FEA) software programs. Items to be analyzed in addition to whole footwear would also include bottom units, upper patterns, upper components and any footwear related technologies.
All projects to be completed with Innovation / Efficiency focus for related product and process.
2 SEASONAL WORKLOAD – Process to be completed through Color Update (CU) and low complexity New Upper (NU) Tech Package Development project types, utilizing PLM (Product Data Management) electronic computer system, while learning Product Development / Engineering process. CU / NU projects to be executed with Pre-Costing and seasonal category gross margin target requirements.
FOOTWEAR DEVELOPMENT projects to be executed in meeting Industry Safety Footwear Standards to ASTM, CSA, EN-ISO and any other country specific related footwear safety compliance requirements.
3 ANALYSIS / TESTING MANAGEMENT –
DATA MODELING / SIMULATION – Through the use of computer aided software, manage 3D CAD data analysis for root cause / fit for use evaluations. This would include Finite Element Analysis (FEA) for footwear and/or component theoretical modeling; related data computation as well as stress / strain failure studies.
BENCHMARKING - Leverage internal Footwear Performance Index (FPI) testing on Kodiak product and competitor product benchmark footwear, providing input to Design / Product Management team to improve product, identifying key positive "feature / benefit" differences or product areas that need enhancements
OUTSOLE Development / Slip Resistance Testing – Participates in the validation of outsole mold development conformance from initial drawings through confirmation of sample size, including Extreme Size bottom molds. Validation includes analyzing sole design and compound usage in support of Slip Resistance / Traction requirements.
MATERIALS and COMPONENTS - Coordinates and maintains material and structural specifications as well as the follow through on the testing of each individual component to maintain Timberland standards for quality, type and durability with regards to compounds, construction and mold type.
4 CALENDAR MANAGEMENT –
Works with Product Engineering team to understand seasonal development calendar, commercialization time-lines, development cycle attributes meeting seasonal product milestones.
Actively participate in all product related milestone meetings, from seasonal kick-off through commercialization.
5 FORWARD ENGINEERING - Works and job shadows with the Product Engineer, Sr. Product Engineer and Lead Product Engineer in the planning and execution of Forward Engineering activities. This includes:
UPPER PATTERN DEVELOPMENT – Contributes and increasing understanding against strategy for components and manages upper development for yield, manufacturability, fit, functional performance, cost and desired aesthetics.
FIT TESTING – Participates and develops understanding of specifications, materials, construction, fit, pattern and process at each stage of the development process providing input as needed to ensure fit, function and manufacturability.
LAST DEVELOPMENT – Assists with the development of lasts based upon desired aesthetic, performance, comfort and fit while maximizing use of existing last library and brand fit consistency
BUY READINESS - Assists development efforts to reach on-time buy readiness on assigned projects by overseeing and meeting all calendar milestones necessary to achieve this goal. Assists in any needed corrective action(s) in Commercialization Project Management.
BEST ENGINEERED PRODUCT - Learns consistency of standardized pattern attributes meeting regional needs to make "Best Engineered Product". Assists as needed, planning and execution of best practices for Cost re-engineering; Manufacturing process enhancement while increasing overall product efficiencies.
6 COMMUNICATION / DOCUMENTATION - Maintain and provide a clear form of documentation and communication with team members in order assist the transfer of the design solutions from concept through final product with country office developers and manufacturing representatives. Also applicable to internal/external VF Corp. and Test / Certification Service companies
7 STRATEGIC THINKING - Ability to possess problem solving skills. Demonstrate a desire to increase depth of product knowledge in growing Product Engineering career goals.
Years of Related Professional Experience:
- Minimum 0-2 years engineering or Biomechanical Testing experience.
- 0-2 years of footwear product development experience is a plus. Proven project management and problem-solving experience.
- Bachelors Degree in an Engineering, Sciences or Industrial Design discipline.
Experience with a PLM / PDM (Product Data management) system is a plus.
Basic computer skills, Microsoft Word, Excel, Microsoft Outlook. 2D CAD, 3D CAD modeling and Finite Element Analysis software, 2D CAD, Adobe Illustrator or Corel Draw is a requirement.
Must possess excellent communication skills, both oral and written, and be comfortable influencing others decisions to reach desired results.

TRAVEL - Travels to manufacturing locations, development centers and suppliers to ensure footwear product integrity is properly executed. Travel to occur 1-2 times per year to assist and learn problem solving of seasonal development projects.
Approximately 5% domestic and international travel, including development centers and vendors to learn the footwear creation / commercialization process.
Additionally, travel to trade shows and "Customer" job site locations necessary for understanding functional/occupational needs and keeping current with future trends in R&D as necessary.
Footwear Product Manager - Fit
The Footwear Product Manager - Fit, will own the footwear fit process at TOMS headquarters and act as the primary point person for adjusting the process to any new product lines and business necessities. This role will be responsible for managing and executing the model and extreme size fit testing process. This role will work cross functionally in partnership with US based footwear developers at time of inception of a new silhouette and the development and pre-production teams in China. The role will report into the VP, Product Development & Commercialization in the Supply Chain – Product Development team.
Manage and execute the model and extreme size fit testing process for new and existing silhouettes
Responsible for adjusting the fit testing process to new product lines and business necessities
Provide direction to development and pre-production teams in regard to fit and design inclusive of the last shape (foot mold)
Responsible for ensuring that HQ based Footwear Developers are creating their products with a fit/comfort right approach from the very early stages of Product Development.
Ensure the detailed and complete technical packages (as a means of communicating proper instruction to factories for initial and in process style development) include technical upper and outsole CAD designs that are submitted for construction to factories.
Organize and communicate frequent activity update to the rest of the Development Team, Merchants/Design Teams
Responsible for co-managing the relationships with last makers in the US and Asia
Maintain an up-to-date knowledge / data base of every foot measurements standard
Lead one direct report and provide guidance and expertise to the global Development and Commercialization teams
Manage and lead ad hoc projects such as: post production investigations as a response to customer reviews and actual product reviews; reviews of legacy lasts to ensure model sizes and dimensions are updated and relevant and run wear testing campaign.
Requirements & Qualifications
Must have Footwear factory experience, specifically women's fashion and Asia-based factories
