NASA's Mission Operations for the International Space Station is located at Johnson Space Center. On Jacobs' JETS contract we provide engineering services to JSC. Come join us and be a vital part of operating the largest space station ever built. We're looking for an Experimental Petrologist.
The Experimental Petrologist will support the Astromaterials Research & Exploration Science Division (ARES) at NASA's Johnson Space Center (JSC) in the field of planetary science. ARES staff members' backgrounds include geology, chemistry, astronomy, physics, biology, mathematics, computer science, and engineering. ARES scientists conduct fundamental planetary research and continue to be involved in the operation and collection/interpretation associated with planetary science research. ARES is also responsible for the curation and analysis of a wide range of solar system materials including the Apollo lunar samples, meteorites, cosmic dust/interplanetary dust particles, cometary samples, solar wind samples, and terrestrial analogs.
The selected candidate for this role will:
Conduct experiments that simulate planetary interiors, including core formation and mantle differentiation processes, and compare these experiments to mission acquired data.
Analyze experimental run products including major/minor/trace element, and isotopic compositions, as well as characterize mineral phases.
Summarize and communicate quantitative results.
Meticulously document procedures and results, and actively participate in safety programs.
Work with in-house, as well as visiting, researchers on all aspects of experimentation and analysis.
Actively develop new experimental techniques and lead innovation projects.
Perform other duties as required.

BS degree from an accredited college or university in an associated technical discipline and a minimum of zero (0) years of experience, or a MS degree in an associated technical discipline with a minimum of two (2) years related experience, or a Ph.D. in an associated technical discipline with a minimum of zero (0) years of related experience.
Experience working in laboratory environment preparing samples, conducting experiments, summarizing results, preparing reports for internal and external use, writing abstracts for submission to national and international meetings, and contributing to the preparation of manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals.
Experience with controlled atmosphere gas mixing, piston cylinder, and/or multi-anvil apparatuses .
Experience with analytical instruments such as electron microprobe and/or scanning electron microscope.
Knowledge of the theory and practice of elemental analyses of geologic samples and data reduction.
Good computer skills are essential
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as excellent interpersonal skills.
A graduate degree and/or significant lab experience.
A track record of technical development projects that expand lab functionality.
The most competitive candidates will have specific experience in experiments that are relevant to planetary science research conducted within ARES.
Candidates at the Ph.D. level are expected to demonstrate how past and future research efforts will enhance ARES research.
